Job Summary

AECOM is currently seeking to hire Principal Engineer ELS to be based at Manchester.

The main purpose of this role is to support Due Diligence and Technical Engineering projects and to assist the Senior ELS Management Team with collaborative projects across other AECOM sectors especially Construction Services, Water and B&P. The role will also provide engineering and operational health and safety advice to ELS colleagues working on compliance projects. The position is to be based in Manchester or Leeds; working heavily with the Birmingham and Wimbledon ELS teams. This will require travel to these offices as and when needed.

Job Duties:


  • Support a wide range of due diligence projects, typically focusing on industrial, infrastructure and commercial businesses and assets;

  • Support of engineering and operational projects associated with the ELS team and other AECOM collaborations;

  • Maintaining excellent current and fluent professional knowledge of health and safety legislation, industry good practices, due diligence practices and deal

  • structures, and communicate these to the wider team. Be a go-to person for junior team queries on technical, financial and other issues. Become a subject specialist e.g. in technical due diligence;

  • Willingness to work out of the home office as required (foreign travel may be required periodically) and the ability and flexibility to work to demanding timescales. Away from office workload can be, on average, up to 1 to 2 days a week, but may be periods of up to 4 or 5 days a week (e.g. due diligence or compliance site visits etc.).

Technical Due Diligence and Compliance

  • Be a leading team member for the delivery of AECOMs technical due diligence, often involving multiple audit days / team members and working in the presence of the client;

  • Managing AECOMs potential liabilities and exposure. Liaison with senior client representatives (due diligence deal teams, corporate directors etc.). Will be required to scope proposals, present progress updates and discuss project results;

  • Coordinate and/or be a key team member in delivering detailed due diligence assessments and reports (including project kick-off, data room reviews, AECOM team coordination (including global offices), site assessments (occasional international travel may be required), preparing commercially focused succinct reports, participating in Q&A sessions with clients or opposite side deal team, reviewing and managing project contracts, including reliance agreements etc.);

  • Coordinate and/or be a key team member in detailed corporate engineering H&S compliance audits, often involving multiple audit days / team members and working in the presence of the corporate client to demanding reporting timescales and varied reporting formats.

Proposal and Project Manager

  • Project management responsibilities include timely and accurate technical delivery of challenging due diligence and compliance projects in accordance with clients schedules, AECOMs EHS and Quality systems, project financial performance targets (including profitability and billing and collections) and compliance with AECOMs project management, risk management and financial management systems;

  • Preparing high quality professional reports, requiring minimal peer review, for senior client audiences (Business Director level);

  • Assist the preparation of complex technical and commercial proposals for EHS compliance and due diligence services working both independently and as part of a larger team.

Business Development

  • Actively supporting and strongly contributing to the ELS business development programme by identifying and securing business development opportunities and building repeat/long-term client relationships for compliance and due diligence services, focusing on industrial, commercial, legal and financial clients and sectors, contributing to sustainable national and international client development.

  • Innovation supporting our team to continuously improve our business by undertaking ongoing critical reviews of our deliverables, assessment and analysis tools, markets etc. to identify opportunities for improving existing methods or identification of new work methods, tools or markets which might benefit the business.

  • Provide support to the ELS team business development function through preparation of case studies, innovative product developments and input into marketing materials.

Mentoring and Leadership

  • Become a technical mentor for junior members of staff and others within the team, specifically regarding the transfer of your compliance and due diligence knowledge. This could include periodic training seminars on relevant specialist topics, in addition to being a day-to-day go to resource for questions and advice;

Minimum Requirements

  • Between 5 and 10 years relevant experience in undertaking EHS compliance and due diligence work for a wide range of industrial facilities and sectors (e.g. automotive, food and beverage, manufacturing, oil & gas, power, chemicals, heavy engineering etc.), working in industry as a senior manager or as a consultant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Suitable relevant HND/degree qualifications.

  • IOSH/NEBOSH DIPLOMA would be preferred but is not essential.

  • Membership of a recognised and relevant professional organisation potentially with a view to becoming a Chartered Member.
