Job Summary

AECOM's Transportation Division is actively seeking a Survey Field Crew Chief for immediate employment in our Rocky Hill, CT office.The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in Land Surveying, specific to Transportation Engineering.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Acts as chief of a field survey crew performing surveys for construction, property/boundary, topographic, right-of-way, transportation and control survey projects

  • Participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and client representatives

  • Assigns and monitors work progress, and provides input for evaluation of members of field survey crew; and instructs, trains and mentors field survey personnel in survey and mapping methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures

  • Gathers field survey data through the skilled use of conventional (TPS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment and methods, 3D laser scanners and other emerging technologies

  • Sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total-stations, digital survey levels, electronic data collectors, and GNSS receivers, in order to measure positions, distances, elevations, and angles

  • Prepares field notes and drawings; and performs field surveying for transportation projects, including airports, highways and roadways, bridges, railroads, and flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal project control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines

  • Performs complex surveying calculations using principles of plane geometry, engineering calculators, laptop computers or personal computers, and vector and coordinate geometry (Cogo) software, such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bentley MicroStation

  • Analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy and provides survey information for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications as well as prepares records of surveys in electronic data format, field books and other manual survey reports

  • Researches existing property records information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents; and maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems

  • May perform mapping, compliance or other related office survey duties, including processing, checking and correcting of field data

  • Operates and keeps survey vehicles in proper working condition, and prepares periodic reports of condition, mileage and maintenance records of such vehicles

  • Reports on the status of and needs for survey equipment and materials inventories on an ongoing basis

  • Reports to survey department manager and may be required to attend periodic staff meetings with manager and senior department supervisors

  • Attends periodic safety training courses, and maintains various safety training certifications

  • Travels to field locations within and outside of the State of Connecticut as required

  • Works outdoors under sometimes hazardous conditions (e.g. weather, construction sites, highways, railroads)

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma

  • 5+ years of experience

  • Experience with airport, construction, highway, railroad, and various transportation surveys and related project control surveys

  • Experience operating various electronic data collection, survey analysis and CAD platforms

  • Experience with conventional and robotic total stations, digital levels, and other survey instruments

  • Experience with GNSS survey methods and procedures

  • Must possess a valid drivers license

  • May be required to pass periodic drug testing, upon request

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Land Surveyor's License

  • Two-year degree in Surveying Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field of study

  • Current OSHA 10-Hour Construction Certification

  • Current OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification

  • Current Amtrak / Metro-North Contractor Safety Program Certification

  • Experience with 3D laser scanning

  • Experience with UAS/Drone surveys
